Clifford’s record-breaker leads UTSA to open weekend competition

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA track & field teams opened up a multi-day, multi-site weekend on Thursday with competition in Austin at the 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin and San Marcos at the Bobcat Invitational.

The opening performance of the day secured the Roadrunners’ highest finish, as senior Lauralyn Clifford finished fifth in the women’s hammer throw at the Texas Relays, breaking her own Saint Lucia National Record for the second time this season – registering a toss of 58.57m (192-2) and extending her lead over the American Conference standings.

Wrapping up the day in Austin, sophomore Diego Ramirez produced a seventh-place finish in the twilight with a 9:48.17 clocking in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Also in Austin, sophomore Charlie Staddon went 55.79 in the 400-meter hurdles to come in 14th.

Topping the largely distance crew in San Marcos, freshman Annaliese Muñoz was 15th in the 400-meter section B at 1:04.29, while classmates Madison Gilliam was 17th in the 800-meter at 2:17.29 and Brianna Venegas came in 43rd at 2:33.32.

On Friday, April 3, the Texas Relays 110-meter hurdles preliminary is 10:30 a.m. ahead of the 100-meter hurdles prelim at 11:05 a.m., 4x400-meter relay at noon and long jump is 12:30 p.m. Wrapping things up on Saturday, April 4, the discus is at 10 a.m., triple jump at 3 p.m. and shot put is at 4 p.m.

On Friday at the Bobcat Invite, UTSA is in the 1,500-meter at 8 p.m. Saturday’s 400m races are at 11:15 a.m.

Up next: The Roadrunners will head to College Station to compete in Texas A&M’s 44 Farms Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium, April 9-11.
