Monie leads UTSA throwers at Pacific Coast Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The UTSA track & field throwing corps split off from the main Southern California party on Thursday, competing at Jack Rose Track in Long Beach State’s Pacific Coast Invitational. Scoring another big performance, Daisy Monie topped the Roadrunners on site with a new career-best shot put performance.

A grad transfer from K-State, Monie (Mission, Texas) bumped up the UTSA all-time performances again to No. 2 on the shot put list. Reaching the finals of the 54-thrower field, Monie delivered a career-best 16.71m (54-10) measurement on her first finals attempt, propelling her into third place – registering the fourth consecutive meet with a medal-worthy performance and extending her lead atop the American Conference standings. Monie returned to action in short order with a discus mark of 51.18m (167-11) for 16th place – just .65m shy of her standing personal best.

Also in women’s throws, senior Lauralyn Clifford opened the day for UTSA with a 56.44m (185-2) measurement in the hammer throw, earning 14th. Junior Nyaluet Diew earned ninth place in the shot put at 15.10m (49-6.5) and was 54th in the discus at 38.92m (127-8).

The lone men’s thrower at the meet, junior Waylon McKenzie was 36th in the discus at 48.77m (160-0).

The 32-Roadrunner party will pick up competition on Friday in the confines of Walnut’s historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium for the 66th Mt. SAC Relays. The Roadrunners open with the collegiate long jump leading off field events at 1 p.m. CT (11 a.m. PT), alongside elite high jump and collegiate triple jump at 6 p.m. CT. The Running events begin Friday on the 100-meter hurdles at 1:25 p.m. CT (11:25 a.m. PT), followed by the 110-meter hurdles at 1:50 p.m. CT, 400-meter at 2:15 p.m. CT, 400-meter hurdles at 4:20 p.m. CT, 200-meter at 5:30 p.m., 800-meter at 6:15 p.m. CT and 1,500-meter at 8:10 p.m. CT.

Saturday’s return to Mt. SAC will see the 110-meter hurdles at 3:55 p.m. CT (1:55 p.m. PT) and 4x400m elite relay at 7:10 p.m. CT on the track, while the throwers will rejoin the squad with an 11 a.m. CT (9 a.m. PT) hammer throw, followed by shot put at 3:30 p.m. CT, alongside long jump elite and high jump elite and triple jump elite at 5:30 p.m. CT.

Up next: Following a week out of action, the Roadrunners will seal up the regular season with a return to E.B. Cushing Stadium and College Station for Texas A&M’s Alumni Muster, May 1-2. The postseason opens in Denton, Texas, with the American Conference Outdoor Championships to be held at the Mean Green Track & Field Stadium, May 14-16.
