WICHITA, Kan.— The UTSA softball team fell via the run rule, 12-4, in game one, before suffering a 3-1 defeat in game two against Wichita State across an American Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.
The Roadrunners (20-25, 8-10 American) fell to the Shockers (27-16, 12-6) in game one, as redshirt junior Madison Collins (1-4) was tagged with the loss and Ava Sliger (6-1) earned the win.
Sophomore Sabrina Wick, redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid, and freshman Brookelynn Meador all logged multiple hits in the effort, while junior Taryn Madlock and senior Katia Reyes each hit home runs.
UTSA struck first, as junior Samantha Mundine singled, before coming around on a base knock for Meador with two outs in the top of the first. Wichita State answered in the second with a three-run home run, affording them a 3-1 edge. They stayed hot, with a solo shot extending their lead to four before the ‘Runners got the final out of the inning.
WSU used a grand slam in the third to work a 9-1 advantage. UTSA responded in the fourth with a two-run bomb by Madlock. Reyes then went yard to pull back within five. The Shockers added one more in the home half, resulting in a 10-4 score line.
The Roadrunners then loaded up the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth as Wick, Madrid, and Meador all singled. The threat, however, did not come to pass as Wichita State induced a flyout to escape the inning unscathed.
A two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth allowed the Shockers to secure a walk-off, 12-4 victory in game one.
In game two, freshman Arlette Hernandez (11-11) was pegged with the loss, going the distance with four strikeouts, while Ryley Nihart (10-9) earned the win. A solo home run for Meador represented UTSA’s lone run of the contest as the ‘Runners fell, 3-1.
The Shockers used a solo home run in the bottom of the second to open the scoring, and another in the third doubled their total.
Meador launched one out of the yard in the top of the fourth to put UTSA on the scoreboard, and WSU used an RBI single in the fifth for a 3-1 lead. From there, the Roadrunners were unable to mount a comeback, suffering the 3-1 loss.
UTSA will now turn its attention towards No. 1 Texas Tech, as they host the Red Raiders on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Roadrunner Field.
