SAN ANTONIO — UTSA registered a 5-1 victory over Lamar in the regular season finale on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners ran their record to 9-10 overall and 9-2 at home with the victory over the Cardinals, who fell to 9-11.
With the threat of rain later in the day, officials decided to start the match with singles instead of doubles. It did not take UTSA long to grab a lead it would never relinquish.
Laia Tarazona Peyro made quick work of Eva Gumenyuk at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 sweep to hand the Roadrunners a 1-0 advantage.
Akari Tomoyose finished off a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Martina Alcaino at No. 3 shortly after to push the lead to 2-0. That decision improved her singles record to 9-8 on the year.
At the top of the lineup, Celine Absawi registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over Arina Gudovskaya to pull the home side to within one point of securing the match.
Valeria Sanchez then provided the clinching point with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Luana Paiva on court two.
Officials then agreed to only play out the two remaining singles matchups and not contest doubles.
Lamar scratched a point at No. 6 singles, as Varvara Popadina downed Milica Milosavljevic, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Natalia Castaneda Guerrero closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-3 victory on court four to notch her seventh singles win of the campaign.
The Roadrunners will travel to Houston for the American Conference Championship, which will be hosted by Rice on Thursday-Sunday, April 16-19, at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
