SAN ANTONIO— The UTSA softball team fell 3-2 against Wichita State in an American Conference series opener on Friday at Wilkins Stadium.
The Roadrunners (20-23, 8-8 American) fell to the Shockers (25-16, 10-6), as freshman Arlette Hernandez (11-10) went the distance, fanning nine in the loss, and Ryley Nihart (9-9) earned the win. Sophomore Sabrina Wick led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run in the effort.
Wichita State threatened in the bottom of the first, loading up the bases with one out. Hernandez, however, prevailed, twirling a strikeout and inducing a lazy fly ball to escape the inning unscathed.
Junior Taryn Madlock doubled to open the second, and a flyout sent her to third, ahead of a senior Katia Reyes single that plated the first run of the ballgame. Wick then launched a solo shot in the third to double the UTSA lead.
With the ‘Runners leading 2-0, a two-hour rain delay paused the game in the third. After resuming, the Shockers knotted things up in the fifth with a two-run triple, and a UTSA miscue allowed them to snag a 3-2 lead.
UTSA will wrap things up against Wichita State on Saturday, with a doubleheader slated for a 10 a.m. start at Wilkins Stadium.
