SAN ANTONIO – On Tuesday, UTSA Baseball visited Incarnate Word for an all-San Antonio matchup at Sullivan Field. The back-and-forth contest saw 19 total pitchers and 26 combined hits, culminating in a walk-off home run for the Cardinals. UIW prevailed 13-11, taking its second straight victory over UTSA and improving to 15-14 on the season. The ‘Runners dropped to 20-9 with a league series at Rice starting on Thursday.
FIRST INNING
Senior right-handed pitcher Gunnar Brown made his third start of the season, taking to the mound after a quiet first showing from his offense. The Houston native kept the hosts off the board with a three-up, three-down inning of his own for a scoreless opening frame.
SECOND INNING
Jacob Silva earned the start at catcher on Tuesday, making a trip to first after being hit by a pitch. Two offerings later, designated hitter Andrew Stucky uncorked one well over the left-field wall for a two-run blast to crack the scoreboard first on the afternoon. Diego Diaz was then struck, making his way to second on a Christian Hallmark bunt single. After advancing to third on a flyout, the second baseman made his way home on a well-placed Jordan Ballin sacrifice bunt. Holding a 3-0 edge, Christian Okerholm took over pitching duties. The senior allowed one run to score courtesy of a double followed up by a groundout and a wild pitch.
THIRD INNING
The visitors earned three free trips to the bases with two hit batters and a walk, but nothing came of the opportunity. Holden Harris got a chance on the bump, but the visitors notched three hits, including a two-run home run. Three more hits ensued after Christopher Gutierrez stepped on the rubber, granting the hosts a 5-3 lead through the game’s first third.
FIFTH INNING
Both sides put up quiet showings in the fourth, highlighted by freshman Jake Qualia retiring three straight batters. Lane Haworth led things off with a double in the fifth, setting up his next three teammates to draw no-out walks. Christian Hallmark then drove in the game-tying run on a fielder’s choice, knotting things up at 5-5. Josh Arquette walked to load the bases once more for Ballin, who ripped a ball back up the middle for a two-run single. Cade Sadler, who entered at first base in the second, then ripped a double down the left field line to bring Ballin around. Drew Detlefsen took the next offering to shallow left field for a base knock, pulling ahead 9-5 to cap off a six-run inning. A walk and a home run from the Cardinals trimmed the deficit as UIW plated two to cut the lead in half at 9-7.
SIXTH INNING
On the first offering from a new pitcher, Lane Haworth belted one deep off the right-field netting for a leadoff solo home run. Jacob Silva then drove one into the right gap for a double, eventually heading home on a sacrifice fly from Diego Diaz. The two-score stanza pushed the visitors back in front by four at 11-7. In the bottom half, Blayne Lyne took over command of the mound, escaping the inning with no damage dealt.
SEVENTH INNING
A pair of free bases and an RBI single got UIW another crooked number on the scoreboard. Mike DeBattista then got out of the inning with a swinging strikeout, taking an 11-8 lead into the eighth.
EIGHTH INNING
A pair of Roadrunner hits came with one away, but back-to-back strikeouts kept the visitors at bay, bringing up the Cardinals. A single, walk and a wild pitch put a pair in scoring position before a ground ball cut the lead to two at 11-9. DeBattista stopped the bleeding there, however, with a flyout to right field.
NINTH INNING
Another uneventful away half brought the Cardinals back up with one last chance down two. A leadoff walk was followed up by a pair of outs as the hosts were down to their final batter. Two straight singles cut the deficit to one before Cole Tabor ended the affair with a three-run home run to right field at 13-11.
