TULSA, Okla. – The UTSA softball team used potent pitching to top Tulsa, 3-1, on Sunday in American Conference action at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
The Roadrunners (14-11, 3-0 American) topped the Golden Hurricane (8-14, 0-3 American) for the program's first series sweep since taking four games from Southern Mississippi in the 2021 season.
Freshman Arlette Hernandez (8-3) went the distance in the victory, fanning six and taking a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth. For Tulsa, Maura Moore (3-6) was pegged with the loss.
Five different ‘Runners logged hits on the afternoon as junior Taryn Madlock launched a solo shot over the wall in center field to hand UTSA a one-run lead in the top of the first.
Things remained quiet until the fourth, when sophomore Sabrina Wick singled, before consecutive outs. From there, redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid laced a double into the gap, knocking in Wick, and a later Golden Hurricane error allowed Madrid to score for a 3-0 advantage.
Tulsa got its first hit of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth, via a leadoff double, and shortly after plated its first run to pull within two.
From there, Hernandez stifled the Golden Hurricane comeback attempt, securing the 3-2 victory and the sweep.
UTSA will now visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, with a 4 p.m. first pitch at Chapman Field, before hosting Memphis in a three-game conference series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
