‘Runners fall to Cardinals on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO— The UTSA men’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of UIW on Saturday at the Dominion Country Club.

The Roadrunners (1-10) fell to the Cardinals (7-1) after sophomore Enzo Vargas and freshman Timeo Bretin started off doubles with a 6-1 win over Santiago Flyckt and Marcel Miralles.

UIW bounced back, as Augustin Salazar and Emilio Vila bested sophomore Oskar Grzegorzewski and senior Luke Cantu, 6-4, before sophomore Ben Chetewy Ungar and freshman Maximilian Ontiveros fell 7-5 to Alexandre Chauvel and Alejandro Heranndez, handing the Cardinals the doubles point.

In singles play, Ian Uraga topped Cantu, 6-0, 6-4, and Bretin got one back, via a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Miralles. Hernandez beat Grzegorzewski 6-4, 6-4 to put UIW up, 3-1, and following a rain delay, Emillio Villa defeated Vargas. 7-5, 6-3 to cement the Cardinal victory. Rounding things out, Flyckt got the job done against Chetewy Ungar, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) and Salazar defeated freshman Constantin Radu, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

UTSA will now turn its attention towards Louisiana, with a match on the docket for Monday, March 16, at 1 p.m. inside the UTSA Tennis Center.
