UTSA takes down TAMUCC, 12-5

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team picked up a 12-5 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, in a matchup that saw sophomore Sabrina Wick go 4-for-4 and a redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid grand slam.

The Roadrunners (11-11) bested the Islanders (5-17) as sophomore Reagan Stoudt (2-4) picked up the win, fanning three over the final five innings of work, while Kendra Winfrey (4-5) was issued the loss.

Freshman Brookelynn Meador drove in three runs for the squad on a 2-for-3 afternoon, while freshman Demiree Stafford knocked in two. Junior Taryn Madlock, classmate Samantha Mundine and senior Katia Reyes also logged RBIs.

UTSA sparked a two-out rally in the bottom of the first, as Wick doubled before coming around and scoring on a Madlock single. From there, Meador and Mundine were issued free passes, bringing up Madrid, who blasted a grand slam over the wall in left center for a 5-0 lead.

TAMUCC got one back in the second, added another in the third, and one in the fourth for a 5-3 score line. Reyes launched a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth to increase the UTSA advantage to three, but the Islanders again plated a run in the fifth, and one more in the sixth pulled them within one.

Reyes singled to open the bottom of the sixth, and a base knock by senior Madison Hornback moved her into scoring position. Stafford drove the pair in on a sharp hit single, ahead of Wick, who kept the party going with a hit of her own. From there, Meador knocked in two, and Mundine scored her for a 12-5 Roadrunner lead that the Islanders were unable to recover from.

The ‘Runners will look to keep the momentum going as they enter American Conference play, with a three-game series on the docket against Tulsa in Oklahoma at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
