Hong collects American Conference weekly honors

IRVING, Texas — UTSA freshman Joshua Hong has been named American Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for his performance in the last two tournaments, the league office announced Wednesday.

Hong collected his first collegiate victory and followed that with a third-place finish during a busy past nine days for the Roadrunners. He is the first UTSA men’s golfer to collect the league’s weekly honor since joining the American in July 2023, and he is the first in the program to claim a conference weekly award since Hunter Bott was tabbed Conference USA Golfer of the Week on April 12, 2023

A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, Hong fired a 1-under-par 215 to win the Military City Collegiate on Feb. 23-24 at TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course, leading the Roadrunners to the team title in the process. He opened the tournament with a 3-under 69 followed by an even-par scorecard on the first day before closing with a 74 in windy conditions on the final day to help UTSA rally from an eight-shot deficit for the trophy.

Playing at the Golden Nugget Invitational on March 2-3 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Hong matched the school record with an 8-under 64 in the opening round and then turned in a 70 to equal Gibby Martens’ program standard for best 36-hole total with a 10-under 134. He posted a 69 in the final round to close out a 13-under 203, one shot shy of the school record for best 54-hole total. His third straight top-three finish secured a runner-up showing for UTSA, which shattered the school record for 54-hole team total with a 38-under 826.

For the season, Hong owns a 71.33 stroke average, four top 10s and 14 par-or-better scorecards, including four sub-70 rounds.

The Roadrunners will be back in action March 16-17 at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in Tucson.
