UTSA to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team will invite Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Roadrunner Field on Wednesday, with a 6 p.m. clash on the docket.

Tickets are available for purchase at www.goutsa.com/sbtickets, and live stats can be found at www.goutsa.com/sbstats.

The Roadrunners (10-11) aim for a .500 record before diving into conference play and carry momentum after going 5-2 a week ago. UTSA started off with a 2-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, then hosted the Birds Up Bash, which featured wins over North Dakota, New Mexico State and Saint Francis.

Freshman Arlette Hernandez was honored as the league’s Pitcher of the Week, going 2-1 in the circle with a 2.42 ERA across 17.1 innings pitched. She fanned 12 and tossed two complete games, also twirling a shutout.

Junior Taryn Madlock starred at the plate, hitting .550 across seven games for the squad, going 11-for-20 at the plate with seven runs scored. She maintained a 1.641 OPS with three home runs, a double, two walks, and seven RBIs. Of her three home runs, one was a walk-off bomb that propelled UTSA past the Aggies, and the final two came in the same game against the Red Flash.

The Islanders (5-16) have victories over Stony Brook, Prairie View A&M, Abilene Christian, and Detroit Mercy early in the campaign. Despite the result, A&M-Corpus Christi has one of the top catchers in the country in Zoey Stewart, who has caught 7 runners stealing, ranking 11th in the NCAA. Holly Ayala and Kendra Winfrey also appear on the national leaderboard, with 16 pitching appearances tying them for sixth. Winfrey has logged four of the squad’s five wins, going 4-4 with a 7.91 ERA and 28 strikeouts. Jade Whitehead owns the other victory and has fanned 20 on the year.

At the plate, Skylar Heger tops the team with a .294 batting average with a home run and seven RBIs. Nobody has driven in as many runs as Zoey Stewart, who boasts nine RBIs, and has also worked 17 walks for a squad-high .788 OPS.
