CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Freshman Maximilian Ontiveros was the UTSA men’s tennis team’s lone victor of the day as they fell to No. 65 Rice, 4-1, in a neutral site match at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex on the campus of Charlotte.
The Roadrunners (3-13) fell to the Owls (12-5) as Rice claimed the doubles point after Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro beat sophomore Enzo Vargas and freshman Timeo Bretin, 6-3, ahead of a 6-3 win for Kabeer Kapasi and Yair Sarouk over sophomore Oskar Grzegorzewski and newcomer Constantin Radu.
In singles action, Navarro bested Bretin, 6-1, 6-0, and Gabriel Porras beat sophomore Ben Chetewy Ungar, 7-5, 6-4, to put the Owls up 3-0. Ontiveros kept the ‘Runners in the fight with a 6-4,7-6 (7-4) victory against Kapasi, before Kuzmenok sealed the deal with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Vargas for the 4-1 final.
UTSA will finish things up in Charlotte on Sunday, taking on the hosts at 10 a.m. CT.
