SAN ANTONIO – UTSA Baseball fell in its opening game against East Carolina on Friday. The ‘Runners (18-8) fell to 2-2 in American Conference play with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Pirates (16-10-1). The Navy & Orange notched just two hits, setting a single-game season low for the second straight outing. The visitors drew within one win of snapping UTSA’s streak of 12 straight conference series won.
FIRST INNING
Christian Okerholm got the start on the mound, but his day was cut short after a pair of walks to start things off. Gunnar Brown took over in relief, escaping the inning with just one unearned run due to an error. The home side went down quickly as the Pirates held an early 1-0 advantage.
THIRD INNING
A trio of Pirate hits scored another two runs in the top half, opening up a 3-0 margin. In the home frame, Brandon Bishop made his way to second after a walk and a stolen base. A dribbler to the right side nearly scored the first Roadrunner of the game, but a quick throw from the second baseman secured the final out of the stanza.
FIFTH INNING
Andrew Stucky led things off with a single, notching his side’s first hit of the night. Caden Miller followed up with a walk before both ‘Runners advanced on a wild pitch. With two away, Jordan Ballin walked the bases loaded, but a groundout to the pitcher got the Pirates out of the inning unscathed.
EIGHTH INNING
Drew Detlefsen tallied his squad’s second and final hit of the night with a rocket to left field. Each of the next two offerings went for outs, however, as UTSA remained scoreless. The affair came to an end three outs later as the hosts failed to follow up Miller’s second walk with any production.
