Clifford leads Roadrunners’ opening competition at Charles Austin

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The UTSA track & field teams opened up competition on Friday on a field event-only schedule on Friday’s opening day at the Charles Austin Classic. The Roadrunners registered a pair of top-three performances to open the meet.

Senior Lauralyn Clifford highlighted the day and opened competition for the Roadrunners, earning second place in the women’s hammer throw with a 54.59m (179-1), marking her second consecutive meet with medal-worthy performance. Later on the men’s side, sophomore Waylon McKenzie hit a personal-best 52.65m (172-9) hammer measurement on his fourth attempt to finish seventh in the finals.

In the women’s long jump, transfer sophomore Nyariek Kur secured a career-best 6.20m (20-4.25) leap to earn third place, just ahead of junior Ida Breigan in fourth at 6.18m (20-3.50).

With the bulk of the competition continuing on Saturday in San Marcos, discus leads things off at 10 a.m., followed by high jump, shot put and triple jump. Running events start with the 4x100-meter relay at 2:30 p.m., followed by 100/110-meter hurdles, 400-meter, 100-meter, 400-meter hurdles, 800-meter, 200-meter, 4x400-meter relays – closing off the meet with distance as the 1,500-meter is at 7 p.m., on to the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter runs.

Up next: Next week will be a busy one on two fronts for the Roadrunners, as elite performers will head to Austin for the 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, April 1-4, while another contingent will head back to San Marcos for the Bobcat Invitational and Multi, April 2-4.
