SAN ANTONIO – Two key plays in the infield were the difference for UTSA Baseball on Tuesday. The Roadrunners hosted Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for their first home midweek game in five weeks. The hosts prevailed 3-1, improving to 18-7 overall while dropping the Islanders to 11-13 on the season. UTSA mustered just three hits, falling well short of its previous season low, but escaped with a gritty win under the lights in front of 1,140 Navy & Orange faithful.
FIRST INNING
Holden Harris made his first start of the season, taking to the mound to open the action on Tuesday. The redshirt sophomore allowed a leadoff double before retiring three straight Islanders. Both the first and final outs of the frame came on swinging misses, matching his season-high punchout total.
SECOND INNING
Cody Demont took to the mound to start things off, making his second appearance of 2026. The redshirt junior quickly sat down the Islanders, making way for his offense. Reigning American Conference Player of the Week Drew Detlefsen was hit by a pitch before heading over to third on a pair of wild pitches. Christian Hallmark then drove in his fellow outfielder for the game’s first run, taking an early 1-0 lead.
FOURTH INNING
Following a quiet third from both sides, each team swapped pitchers in the fourth. Connor Kelley did so for UTSA, making his second straight Tuesday relief appearance. The junior needed just 10 pitches to keep the Islander bats cold, but nothing materialized in the home half either.
SIXTH INNING
After another pitching change, A&M-Corpus Christi answered with a solo home run, tying the affair at 1-1 with their third hit of the evening. A leadoff Caden Miller single was followed up by an intentional walk to Drew Detlefsen, placing two ‘Runners aboard for the first time all night. Once again, no score came to bear, however, maintaining the 1-1 stalemate.
SEVENTH INNING
Freshman pitcher Christopher Gutierrez took over with a runner on third base and two away in the top half. On a hard-hit ball off the mound, Josh Arquette made a leaping stop at second base, rifling it over to Miller at first to end the frame and keep a run off the board. Seven pitches later, the visitors came back up to bat.
EIGHTH INNING
With Sam Simmons stepping in for the final two frames, the Islanders led off with a single. On an ensuing strikeout, the runner advanced to second via a stolen base. A second single made its way to left field, with Drew Detlefsen hurling it back into the infield as the runner headed home. A close pay held up after review, confirming the one-hop throw made it to catcher Jacob Silva in time, keeping another run off the board and electrifying the crowd of more than 1,100.
In the home half, Jordan Ballin walked on four straight pitches, setting up Caden Miller with no outs. The sophomore ripped a double to right-center field, sending his shortstop to third base. A throwing miscue from A&M-Corpus Christi gave Ballin the green light to head home, handing UTSA its second lead of the night. A sacrifice bunt and well-placed groundout brought Miller around to score just two batters later, doubling the edge to 3-1.
NINTH INNING
Simmons forced three straight groundouts to end the night, stepping on first base himself for the final out. His 2.0 scoreless innings to close it out earned him the victory, securing a 3-1 win for the Roadrunners in what was their second over the Islanders this month.
