BOCA RATON, Fla. – In its weekend finale, UTSA Baseball put up its most runs of the season to secure a road series win. The Roadrunners tallied 17 hits and scored 18 times in a run-rule victory at Florida Atlantic. Jacob Silva was remarkable at the plate, notching four hits and his first first-ever home run. With the 18-8 win, the visitors improved to 17-7 overall, taking two of three games in their first American Conference series of the campaign.
FIRST INNING
Caden Miller set the tone with a single on the second pitch of the game. With two away, Jacob Silva did the same. A Diego Diaz walk loaded the bases before Christian Hallmark’s one-strike shot to right started the scoring. For the third straight day, UTSA hung a crooked number in the opening frame, posting two on Sunday. When Kendall Dove took to the mound for his sixth weekend start of the spring, the senior got right to work, striking out the first two batters in a 1-2-3 inning.
SECOND INNING
A first-pitch home run got FAU on the board before a double and two singles gave the hosts a slim lead. The Owls took a 3-2 edge into the third frame before going scoreless in each of their next two trips to the plate.
THIRD INNING
Lane Haworth, Drew Detlefsen and Jacob Silva led things off with three straight singles, tying the game on the final hit. An ensuing groundout plated the go-ahead run, with Detlefsen touching home to put his side ahead 4-3. In the home half, Dove needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order.
FIFTH INNING
Following a quiet fourth from both sides, Detlefsen wasted no time with a first-pitch, leadoff double. The very next offering went to Silva, who ripped one deep to right field for his first home run of the season. Diaz then reached on an error before a pair of free bases placed three runners on. Another Owl miscue scored a pair on an errant throw home, pushing the visitors ahead 8-3. An Andrew Stucky sacrifice fly and a Caden Miller groundout both resulted in RBIs, granting UTSA a 10-3 advantage. FAU cut into the deficit with three straight singles and a home run in the bottom half, making it 10-7.
SIXTH INNING
Silva got things going yet again, singling through the right side one pitch before Diaz matched. Christian Hallmark then notched his side’s third straight hit on as many pitches with a bunt, prompting another pitching change for FAU. Josh Arquette and Jordan Ballin then became the fourth and fifth straight ‘Runners to single, setting up Stucky’s second consecutive sacrifice fly. Back up 13-7, Miller passed the bat with an RBI base knock, sparking yet another change on the mound. Lane Haworth then came through with a deep out to score a run, bringing Detlefsen back up to the plate. The senior went deep for the first time all weekend, adding two to the visitors’ tally at 17-7. With Christopher Gutierrez taking over the Roadrunner pitching duties, FAU added one solo home run before going down quietly.
SEVENTH INNING
Josh Arquette was struck by a pitch, stealing his way to second shortly after. Then, Andrew Stucky notched the game’s final run with a double to deep left-center. Down by 10, FAU went down quickly as Gutierrez took just eight pitches to end the affair in run-rule fashion.
