Pitchers' Duel Goes to UTSA for 1-0 Conference Start

BOCA RATON, Fla. – On Friday, UTSA Baseball opened up its 2025 American Conference regular season title defense in a series opener at Florida Atlantic. The Roadrunners took an early lead and shut down the Owls’ offense for a 4-1 victory. With the win, the visitors (16-6) started off league play 1-0, handing FAU (13-9) a loss in its first conference clash.

FIRST INNING

Lane Haworth reached on a two-out walk, making his way to scoring position on a wild pitch. Coming off a five-hit game on Tuesday, Drew Detlefsen stayed red-hot with a single to left field, bringing home his team’s first run of 2026 league play. In the bottom half, Christian Okerholm picked up his first weekend start of the season. The senior cruised in the early stages, opening the night with nine straight retired batters.

THIRD INNING

Neither squad was able to muster a baserunner in the second frame as UTSA clung to its small advantage. Another 1-2-3 showing in the top half preluded Okerholm’s final full inning of work. The Austin native sat down the Owls on just eight pitches, including a swinging miss for his second punchout of the contest.

FOURTH INNING

Gunnar Brown took over following a leadoff FAU walk, ending Okerholm’s night after three exceptional innings. A double play relieved some stress on the basepaths before FAU eventually landed its first hit of the game with a bloop single to left. The inning’s third walk loaded the bases before Brown escaped unscathed with a first-pitch groundout.

FIFTH INNING

A leadoff double from Christian Hallmark preluded a pair of walks from Jordan Ballin and Caden Miller. With the bases juiced, Jacob Silva plated the game’s second run with a sacrifice fly to shallow center field. In the home half, a double and a walk posed a threat from the Owls, but Brown forced a lineout to right field for another scoreless inning.

SIXTH INNING

After a quiet top half from his offense, Brown returned for his third inning on the bump. The Owls cut the lead in half with a solo home run to right field, plating their first run and the first four-bagger for either side on the evening. With two away, Sam Simmons took to the mound, ending the frame with three straight swinging misses.

SEVENTH INNING

With one away, Jordan Ballin reached on an infield single before advancing on an error. The ensuing pitch went to Caden Miller, who landed a well-placed bunt for an infield single before another Owl miscue sent Ballin home. The second straight pitch with an infield single and error gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage heading into the seventh-inning stretch.

EIGHTH INNING

Detlefsen ripped a leadoff double, making his way to third on a sacrifice bunt from Diego Diaz. Andrew Stucky then made the most of his lone hit on the night, driving it hard over the pitcher’s head for his side’s fourth and final run. When Simmons returned to the mound, he needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order.

NINTH INNING

A scoreless last trip to the plate for UTSA gave the hosts one final chance down three. Simmons concluded his 3.1 innings of work with a 1-2-3 frame, recording a groundout then two flyouts. With a final score of 4-1, the senior notched his second save of the season, securing a 1-0 start in American play.
