SAN ANTONIO— The UTSA women’s basketball team picked up a 67-55 victory over Memphis in American Conference action on Sunday at the Convocation Center, in a nationally televised matchup on ESPNU.
The Roadrunners (13-14, 8-8 American) tamed the Tigers (9-20, 3-13 American), with junior Idara Udo recording 18 points and eight rebounds, while senior Cheyenne Rowe tallied 16 points with nine boards. Classmate Ereauna Hardaway joined the pair in reaching double-digit scoring figures, with 11 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists. Freshman Adriana Robles charted nine points, with a career-high six rebounds and five assists.
As a team, UTSA hauled in 48 rebounds to Memphis’ 28, also logging 14 more points in the paint, and nine second-chance points to the Tigers' zero.
UTSA started hot, scoring the first five points of the contest, before a later Hardaway layup saw a 13-5 edge. Memphis pulled back within three, but the ‘Runners finished the quarter strong, owning an 18-10 lead.
Multiple spurts allowed Memphis to again trim their deficit to three, until a Rowe jumper saw a 30-25 advantage headed into the locker room
The Roadrunners started the third on a 6-0 run featuring makes by Rowe and Udo. Another six-point surge later in the period put UTSA up, 42-26. Memphis responded with a seven-point swing of their own to claw within eight, and the battle raged on until the ‘Runners headed to the final frame leading, 51-44.
With the Tigers in striking distance, Rowe sparked a nine-point run that allowed a sophomore Damara Allen triple to work a 64-51 advantage. From there, UTSA kept the opposition at arm's length, cruising to a 67-55 victory.
UTSA will wrap up the home slate on Wednesday, hosting Tulsa at 6:30 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
