Islanders Await on Tuesday as Road Trip Continues

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Following a headline-grabbing weekend, UTSA Baseball returns to action on Tuesday. The Roadrunners’ 10-game stretch away from home rolls on with a trip to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. from Chapman Field. The Islanders sit at 8-4, fresh off a series victory over Texas Southern at home. UTSA looks to keep its offense humming and improve on its 10-1 start while still in search of its first true road victory this spring.

LAST TIME OUT

The ‘Runners spent their weekend in Houston for the BRUCE BOLT College Classic, hosted at Daikin Park; the home of the Astros. UTSA toppled Ohio State (6-5), No. 9 Coastal Carolina (16-10) and Baylor (11-6) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The three statement victories included two Power Four opponents and a top-10 upset, propelled by seven home runs and 38 total hits while batting .342.

The pitching staff took care of business, boasting an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 22:7. Conor Myles wowed in Sunday’s win over the Bears, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings. The Australian tallied four strikeouts and allowed just three hits, picking up his first victory of the year.  

THIS GUY MASHES

Left fielder Drew Detlefsen wowed at the plate over the weekend, making four appearances in the starting lineup as UTSA posted a 3-1 mark that included an undefeated stay at the BRUCE BOLT College Classic. The senior tallied three home runs, belting two in Saturday's 16-10 upset of No. 9 Coastal Carolina. For the week, Detlefsen batted .444, tallying eight hits and being struck by two pitches to amass an OPS of 1.500. Four extra-base hits helped drive in six runs while scoring a half dozen of his own. For his efforts, Detlefsen was named to the American Conference Player of the Week Honorable Mention list.

The second-year Roadrunner now holds a .396 batting average on the year alongside an OPS of 1.161. He paces the team in home runs (four), total bases (34) and runs (17), while sitting one behind the club lead in hits (19) and RBIs (16). 

‘RUNNERS IN THE POLLS

On Monday, D1Baseball released its updated top-25 list after the first three weeks of the spring. UTSA snuck in the final spot, earning a No. 25 ranking from the outlet following a 3-0 weekend in Houston. Perfect Game USA also ranked the Roadrunners, doing so for the second straight week with a bump up to No. 18. At the end of the 2025 campaign, the ‘Runners earned a No. 13 distinction in the D1Baseball poll, solidifying the highest mark in program history.

TAKE ‘EM WHERE YOU CAN GET ‘EM

This year, UTSA has already been hit by 27 pitches, ranking 20th in the nation and atop the American Conference. The squad has also drawn 64 walks through 11 games in 2026, totaling an average of 8.3 free bases per game. In all but one outing this season, the Roadrunners have drawn at least four bases on balls.

A GRAND WEEK

Christian Hallmark recently wrapped up an exceptional four games at the plate, guiding his squad to a record-breaking week (Feb. 17-22). For his efforts, the first-year Roadrunner was named American Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 23.

The center fielder started all four contests, posting five hits and drawing five walks for an on-base percentage of .647. His base knocks drove in seven runs, highlighted by a grand slam against the Flames on Feb. 17 that boosted his weekly OPS to 1.374. He scored three runs of his own as UTSA outpaced its opposition by a 38-22 margin over four games. Elsewhere, Hallmark racked up two more stolen bases on as many attempts, adding 11 putouts without an error.

FLY LIKE DOVE

Junior Kendall Dove has been simply shutting the opposition down early in 2026. The second-year Roadrunner has made three appearances on the mound, tallying 13.1 innings of work. Dove is now 2-0 on the season, striking out 12 batters and allowing just four earned runs. Batters are hitting .226 and still have yet to record a home run across his trio of weekend starts.

MILLER TIME

Starting all 11 games at first base this season has been sophomore Caden Miller. The second-year Roadrunner is batting .351 to open the campaign, already notching 13 hits, including seven for extra bases. He has driven in 12 runs while scoring 16 of his own, due in part to his three stolen bases and team-high 11 walks drawn. His four-hit weekend in Houston was highlighted by a three-run blast against Baylor on Sunday, securing his second straight three-RBI day.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS

A&M-Corpus Christi is under the direction of 19th-year Head Coach Scott Malone, who holds a 450-522-2 record with the program. The squad went 21-31 in 2025, but is off to an 8-4 start this year. The Islanders recently pulled off a four-game winning streak that included a 5-2 defeat of Pittsburgh before Texas Southern took the series finale by a score of 16-4 on Sunday at Chapman Field.

Following their bout with the Islanders, the Roadrunners will head to the Land of Enchantment for a three-game set with New Mexico State. The Aggies (5-6) will host the series from Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, N.M., with first pitch set for 7 p.m. CT (6 p.m. MT) on Friday, March 6.
