TUCSON, Ariz. — Logan Vargas fired a 5-under-par 67 to highlight UTSA action in the final round of the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Tucson Country Club.
Vargas posted the best score of his two-year UTSA career to help lead the Roadrunners to a 5-under 283 in the final round of the 54-hole tournament. The senior from Lubbock also logged his top finish and 54-hole total while at UTSA by tying for 12th with a 5-under 211.
UTSA was one of six teams not able to complete round two before darkness set in on Monday evening. The Roadrunners finished that round early Tuesday morning before turning in a red number for the final 18 holes as a team for the fourth time in their last six rounds.
The Roadrunners ended up in 11th place with an 869, three shots ahead of Pacific, 19 in front of Wyoming and 57 better than Hawai’i while finishing only three strokes out of a three-way tie for eighth between Grand Canyon, New Mexico State and UTEP.
Vargas wrote down five birdies during a bogey-free final round to move up into a three-way tie for 12th. His final round started on No. 10 and he needed just three holes to dip to 2-under par as he birdied the 486-yard, par-4 11th and the 179-yard, par-3 12th holes. After reeling off six pars to close out a 34 on the back, he notched his third birdie with a four on the 553-yard first. He also circled his number on the 602-yard, par-5 fifth and the 482-yard, par-4 seventh en route to a 33 on the front.
Vargas’ 67 eclipsed his previous UTSA best of 69 posted at the 2024 Trinity Forest Invitational, while his 5-under 211 and his tie for 12th edged out a 4-under 212 turned in while tying for 19th at the 2025 American Conference Championship.
Francisco Solorza joined Vargas in the red for the final round with a 3-under 69 that featured four birdies. He went back-to-back on Nos. 13-14 and added two more on the 421-yard, par-4 fourth and the 478-yard, par-4 sixth en route to the best score of his redshirt freshman campaign. The Mexico native ended up with a share of 21st at 2-under 214 (72-73-69) to log his second straight event with a 54-hole tally below par.
Joshua Hong tied for 48th with a 221 (72-76-73), Brayden Bare grabbed a share of 68th with a 228 (76-73-79) and Sam Acharya was 74th (76-81-74—231) to close out the lineup.
No. 22 Arizona claimed the team title with an 839, followed by No. 32 Long Beach State (840), No. 5 Arizona State (843), Colorado (843), 14th-ranked Oklahoma (847) and No, 18 New Mexico (854) in the 14-team field.
Long Beach State’s Alejandro De Castro won the individual crown with a 13-under 203 (65-65-73).
The Roadrunners will continue their spring slate next Monday-Tuesday, March 23-24, with the Bell Bank “Pay It Forward” Collegiate in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
