TUCSON, Ariz. — Logan Vargas is in a tie for 21st and UTSA is in 12th after the opening day of the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate, which got underway Monday at Tucson Country Club.
The field finished the first round but only six of the 14 teams completed round two before darkness set in, forcing play to be suspended until Tuesday. Play will resume in the morning followed by the final round.
Vargas is part of a five-way tie for 21st at 1-under par. The senior from Lubbock opened his week with a 1-under 71 that featured four birdies, including three over a five-hole stretch on the front nine. The redshirt freshman out of Mexico posted a 72 in the first round on the strength of birdies on the 421-yard, par-4 fourth and on the 602-yard, par-5 fifth. Like Vargas, he has made it through 13 holes of the second round sitting at even par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 against a pair of bogeys.
