Late Rally Comes Up Short

SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, UTSA Baseball welcomed UT Arlington for the midway point of a three-game series at Roadrunner Field. The hosts took an early lead, but a seven-run fifth inning pushed the Mavericks in front for good. UTA (7-11) won its second straight game, snapping UTSA’s (14-5) streak of 12 straight regular-season series victories.

FIRST INNING

Conor Myles was first on the mound for Pat Hallmark’s squad on Saturday. The graduate sat the visitors down quickly early on, making way for his teammates at the plate. Lane Haworth was plunked with two away before Drew Detlefsen doubled to open up the scoring. Diego Diaz then rifled a 2-2 offering off the pitcher’s leg, dribbling it into left field and bringing Detlefsen 180 feet around the bases. Josh Arquette then stepped up to the plate, belting one 407 feet off the netting in left field for a 4-0 lead.

FOURTH INNING

After plating their first run in the third, UTA got back to work in the game’s middle third. A one-out single put a runner on before the Mavericks answered with a home run of their own. The blast snuck just inside the left-field foul pole, drawing the visitors within one at 4-3.

FIFTH INNING

A Roadrunner error and UTA’s second home run of the day cued the end of the day on the mound for Myles as the Mavericks pulled ahead 5-4. Gunnar Brown took over pitching duties as a trio of hits and two walks expanded the lead. Two RBI groundouts preluded an inning-ending strikeout, but a seven-run frame ended with a 10-4 margin.

SIXTH INNING

Nathan Johnson went deep for the second time in his young career, launching a solo shot to left field with two away. The four-bagger came unsupported in the sixth, sending the affair to its final third with a 10-5 mark.

EIGHTH INNING

After both sides went 1-2-3 in the seventh, Christian Okerholm stepped in to pitch for UTSA at the start of the eighth. A pair of Maverick doubles scored their 11th run of the afternoon, sending the ‘Runners up to bat down six. Lane Haworth’s double and a Diego Diaz walk showed cracks in the new Maverick pitcher, but nothing came of the opportunity.

NINTH INNING

Jacob Silva and Caden Miller each reached via singles, making way for Andrew Stucky down to his side’s last out. The catcher sent one over the netting in left field, towering a three-run drive that cut the lead in half. However, two pitches later, the rally came to an end as the hosts fell 11-8.
