Detlefsen Goes Deep Twice in 15-8 Win

SAN ANTONIO – On Sunday, UTSA Baseball hosted its third and final game of the weekend against UT Arlington. The Roadrunners (15-5) prevailed 15-8, utilizing three home runs to snap a three-game skid. The Mavericks posted their second consecutive seven-run fifth inning, but failed to match the hosts’ offensive firepower, dropping to 7-12 this season.

FIRST INNING

Right-handed pitcher Kendall Dove earned the nod from Pat Hallmark, notching his fourth Sunday start of the season. A laser from center fielder Drew Detlefsen froze a Maverick heading home and held the visitors scoreless through one.

SECOND INNING

The hosts got to work with one away, drawing back-to-back walks courtesy of Jacob Silva and Nathan Johnson. Cade Sadler picked up the start at first base, beating out a well-placed infield single for the game’s first score. Aidan Eshelman followed up with a hit to right-center, driving in Silva to double the lead. With two gone, Detlefsen ripped his seventh home run of the season to left-center, plating three ‘Runners to pull ahead 5-0.

THIRD INNING

Dove remained solid on the bump, not allowing a hit across an 11-out stretch. When his offense stepped back up, Lane Haworth sent a leadoff single through the right side, later advancing to third on an error. Josh Arquette’s subsequent base knock sent the junior home, amassing a half-dozen run edge.

FIFTH INNING

After both sides went down in order in the fourth, UTA responded with a big trip to the plate. Five hits, two free bases and an error proved costly in the frame as the Mavericks posted seven runs in the fifth for the second straight day. Sam Simmons came in for the final two outs of the frame, heading to the game’s second half down 7-6.

SIXTH INNING

Two hits and a walk expanded the UTA edge to two in the frame before a Maverick pitching change in the bottom half. Christian Hallmark debuted in the lineup with a leadoff single, making way for Caden Miller’s walk. Diego Diaz then came to the plate with one away, blasting the first pitch just over the wall in left-center, flipping the game on its head to take a 9-8 lead. Just three offerings later, Detlefsen went deep once again, ripping a 1-1 pitch 427 feet to left field for a two-run advantage.

SEVENTH INNING

Josh Arquette and Christian Hallmark both walked ahead of Caden Miller, whose single scored one and placed runners at the corners with one away. A Jordan Ballin sacrifice fly preluded yet another base on balls, setting up Detlefsen’s third hit of the day. A pair of errors helped two more runs score, making the affair 14-8 by the time UTA recorded the third out.

EIGHTH INNING

Arquette reached on a five-pitch walk, eventually making his way home on a Christian Hallmark RBI double for the game’s final score. After a quiet ninth, UTSA secured victory at 15-8 and snapped a three-game skid.
