‘Runners Come up Short in Road Trip Finale

LUBBOCK, Texas – UTSA Baseball concluded its grueling 10-game stay away from home on Wednesday, facing Texas Tech for the second straight day. The Red Raiders (11-5) produced seven runs in the sixth inning, taking the lead for good in an eventual 10-5 win. With the loss, UTSA fell to 14-3 overall, dropping its first Power Four bout of the season.

FIRST INNING

A trio of walks to Caden Miller, Lane Haworth and Josh Arquette loaded the bases in an instant for the visitors. Nothing materialized of the opportunity, however, sending out Ryan Self for his third career start. The freshman shut down the opposition early on, quickly retiring three straight batters after allowing a leadoff single.

SECOND INNING

Christian Hallmark led things off in the second with a no-doubt home run to right field, notching his third four-bagger of the season. The second pitch of the inning went 401 feet and broke open the scoring at 1-0 in favor of UTSA.

THIRD INNING

Arquette got things going with a hit before Diego Diaz’s double put both runners in scoring position. The speedy Hallmark then beat out an infield single, plating Arquette to amass a 2-0 lead. In the home half, a one-out walk was followed up by two straight base knocks as TTU cut the deficit in half. Ryan Self wrapped up his day on the mound after 2.2 innings, making way for Christopher Gutierrez, who ended the frame on a swinging strikeout.

FOURTH INNING

First baseman Caden Miller remained hot at the plate, leading off with a single. With two away, Josh Arquette unloaded on a one-strike pitch, bouncing it off the scoreboard in right-center field. The home run was Arquette’s third of the season, bringing Miller around and doubling UTSA’s total for a 4-1 advantage. Meanwhile, Gutierrez matched the longest outing of his season at the conclusion of a 1-2-3 bottom half.

SIXTH INNING

Christian Okerholm, who took over in the fifth, returned to the mound. The Red Raiders started off with a triple and a home run, prompting a pitching change from Pat Hallmark. Two more hits and an RBI groundout preluded another home run, breaking a tie to put the hosts ahead 6-4. One walk later, the visiting coach returned to the mound, signaling to Lubbock native Jake Qualia out of the bullpen. After TTU’s third home run of the inning, the freshman escaped with two straight outs. A seven-run frame pushed the hosts ahead 8-4 entering the night’s final third.

SEVENTH INNING

Despite a pitching change from TTU and a walk to Jacob Silva, the visitors failed to produce runs yet again. A walk and three straight singles then brought two more Red Raiders around to score, opening up the lead to 10-4 at the end of the bottom half.

EIGHTH INNING

Two free bases and Lane Haworth’s steal of second put a pair in scoring position for Arquette. The third baseman breathed life into his offense, dropping a single in to right-center to score Caden Miller. No further damage was done by either side as Texas Tech closed things out by a final score of 10-5.
