Former Roadrunner to represent Puerto Rico at FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Former UTSA women’s basketball player Nina De Leon Negron is set to represent her native Puerto Rico at the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifier tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

De Leon Negron starred for UTSA in the 2025-26 season, earning American Conference Newcomer of the Year and Second-Team All-Conference honors, while leading the squad to a regular season championship. She appeared in 30 games with 29 starts, averaging 9.0 points and 5.1 rebounds with 149 assists and 46 steals.

Previously, she represented Puerto Rico at the Centrobasket U17 Women's Championship, where she posted 15.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, and 5.0 APG.

De Leon Negron is set to make her senior team debut on Wednesday, when Puerto Rico takes on Italy, ahead of a matchup with the United States on Thursday, Spain on Saturday, Senegal on Sunday and New Zealand on Monday. All games will stream live on Courtside 1891 via HBO Max.

In total, there are four tournaments of six teams, with 16 teams qualifying for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026. The host (Germany) and the winners of each Women’s Continental Cup 2025 (Australia, Belgium, Nigeria, and USA) will participate in these Qualifying Tournaments; however, they receive automatic qualification for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026.

The top three teams from each Qualifying Tournament will qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, along with a Continental Cup winner.
