UTSA Softball Puts on Successful UTSA Invitational

by Sean Cartell

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA played host to one of the nation’s premiere regular-season tournaments and the top opening weekend tournament this past Friday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field and it proved to be the most successful event in program history.

The Roadrunners welcomed No. 1 Texas – the defending NCAA Champion, No. 9 Nebraska and No. 25 Washington to San Antonio for the event.

UTSA brought in outfield bleachers to increase Roadrunner Field’s capacity from 300 fans to more than 1,000. The event also featured a fan zone that included a food-truck park just outside the venue.

A total of 6,734 fans attended the nine games of the UTSA Invitational, including four games with 900 or more fans apiece. The Texas/Nebraska game on Friday set a Roadrunner Field single-game record with 1,023 fans. The UTSA/Texas game on Sunday was the largest crowd ever to attend a UTSA game at Roadrunner Field with 959 in attendance.

UTSA Athletics broadcast all nine games of the UTSA Invitational through ESPN+ for a total viewing time of 18 hours and 16 minutes. The broadcast team was comprised of Alex Loeb (play-by-play) and Cat Osterman (analyst). It is Osterman’s third season calling UTSA games and Loeb’s second. The duo also works together on national ESPN linear broadcasts, has called countless games together for ESPN’s Longhorn Network and announces NCAA Regionals annually for ESPN. Last season, they were nominated for several D1Softball Golden Mic Awards, including Best Broadcast Team, Best Local Booth, Best Local Play-by-Play (Loeb) and Best Local Analyst (Osterman). The broadcasts were directed by UTSA Sports Production Assistant Aaron Magill and produced by Director of Sports Production Elliott Greisen.

Clips of the ESPN+ broadcasts shared on the NCAA Softball X account this weekend generated more than 284,100 views for the tournament.

Prior to the start of the season, UTSA softball sold out of both reserved and general admission season tickets for the first time in program history. It marked the third consecutive season that the Roadrunners sold out the reserved season tickets. UTSA Softball season ticket sales increased 77.6 percent year-over-year from the 2025 campaign.

Quoting UTSA Head Softball Coach Vann Stuedeman

“All of our players and all of our coaching staff are getting texts and calls about what a great tournament this is and how good it looks on TV. It’s bringing a lot of attention to UTSA and San Antonio. This is such a great city and such a great school, and I’m just glad we have the stage to showcase it.”

“San Antonio, you proved yourselves and you proved that you’re softball lovers. We sold out almost every single game and set a record with 1,023 people in one of the games. That’s incredible. I really appreciate all the San Antonians for coming out. Even if you didn’t cheer for UTSA, maybe we got a new fan out of you.”

“It helps us in recruiting. It helps people know that we are pushing to be in the conversation for conference championships and we are putting a quality product out on the field. The entire athletics department really pitched in to make this a huge success.”
