COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UTSA track & field teams opened competition on Friday in the third meet of the year at R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track, with junior Ida Breigan and sophomore Mia Lien earning the top UTSA performances to kick off the Charlie Thomas Invitational.
Running into the latter events of the opening day of competition in College Station, Breigan secured UTSA’s lone gold of the day and her first event victory of the indoor season with a. 6.35 (20-10) measurement on her third long jump attempt, beating out the next competitor by 0.04m. Sophomore Brina Like added a 10th-place finish in the event, reaching 5.81m (19-0.75) on her opening attempt.
Earlier in the afternoon’s field events, Lien collected silver in the high jump, matching her season high at 1.80m (5-10.75) after coming up just short on the 1.84m attempt. This is her second time hitting the 1.80m mark in two attempts this season. Also in the high jump, junior Edlin Laur went 1.75m (5-8.75) for sixth overall and fourth among collegiate performers.
Competition at Charlie Thomas will continue on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. with the men’s weight throw, followed in the afternoon by triple jump and shot put sections. On the track beginning at 1 p.m., the schedule has the 3,000-meter, followed by 60-meter, 60-meter hurdles, mile, 800-meter and the 4x400-meter relays to conclude around 6:20 p.m.
