‘Runners fall to Blazers in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM — The UTSA women’s basketball team fell to UAB, 81-69, on Tuesday in American Conference play at Bartow Arena.

The Roadrunners (10-11, 5-5 American) fell to the Blazers (9-13, 2-8 American), despite a team-high 17 points from senior Ereauna Hardaway. Not far behind, classmate Cheyenne Rowe scored 16 to go with seven rebounds, and junior Idara Udo charted 12 points.

Rowe banged home a triple to kick-start the contest, and Hardaway hit a layup for a quick five-point advantage. The Blazers knocked down a triple, and the squads traded makes for a 7-5 UTSA lead midway through the frame. UAB tied things up, ahead of a 15-14 Blazer lead entering the second.

Junior Jayda Holiman used a three-pointer to hand her squad a 19-17 edge, and a Rowe layup grew the advantage to four. UAB replied with a 6-0 run that put them back in front, before an Udo layup saw a 23-23 deadlock.  The Blazers, however, finished the half strong, taking a 32-27 lead into the locker room.

UAB opened the third with an 11-2 surge that issued a 43-29 score line. Their success continued, with a 51-31 lead halfway through the period. A 7-0 run helped chip away at the deficit, pulling UTSA within 12. UAB then scored nine of the next 12 points to finish the quarter leading, 59-41.

UTSA kept fighting, clawing back to a 12-point deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 81-69.

The Roadrunners will look to bounce back on Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matchup against Tulsa at 2 p.m. inside the Reynolds Center in Oklahoma.
