Roadrunners register top finish of season at Compadres Collegiate

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Led by top-10 finishes from Joshua Hong and David Martinez, UTSA registered a third-place finish at the Compadres Collegiate, which concluded Tuesday at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club (par 71/6,701 yards).

Hong tied for third place at even par and Martinez earned a share of seventh place at 5-over par to help guide the Roadrunners to their best team finish of the season.

UTSA posted its best team round of the week with a 2-over 290 on Tuesday to close out an 890 and finish ahead of Drake by two shots and Western Carolina by four. The Roadrunners ended up only five strokes behind runner-up North Texas and 10 back of host UTRGV, which claimed the title with an 880. The third-place team finish is UTSA’s best since placing third at the 2024 Bentwater Invitational.

Hong logged the second top 10 of his debut campaign by tying for third with his 216. The true freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, opened the event with a 2-under 70 and turned in his second red number of the week in the final round with a 1-under 71 that featured birdies on the 547-yard, par-5 seventh and 451-yard, par-4 11th hole. He ended up with 13 birdies and only four shots off the pace of 4-under par set by medalist Tyler Jones of Western Carolina.

Playing in his first tournament of his sophomore season, Martinez notched his second career top 10 by tying for seventh with a 221. The Houston Memorial High School product bounced back from back-to-back 75s to start the week with a 1-under 71 that included six birdies, four coming as part of a 2-under 34 on the front nine. He matched Hong for the team lead with 13 birdies and led the entire field by playing the par fours at 1-under par.

Francisco Solorza recorded his top finish as a Roadrunner, as the redshirt freshman transfer from Guadalajara tied for 19th with a 227. After opening with a 72-80—152 over the first two days, he carded a 75 on the strength of three birdies to give him nine circled numbers for the week.

Sam Acharya and Brayden Bare rounded out the UTSA lineup. Acharya, a freshman from Nepal, closed out a 230 with a 1-over 73 that was highlighted by four birdies, including three in a row on Nos. 12-14, to earn a share of 25th place. Bare, a redshirt junior out of Waco, posted an eagle on the 375-yard, par-4 first hole during his final round 79, tying for 41st with a 236 (75-82-79).

Playing as an individual, Jacob King finished 24th with a 229 (73-78-78).

The Roadrunners will return home to host the Military City Collegiate presented by USAA on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 23-24, at TPC San Antonio’s Canyons Course. Admission is free.
