Schuldt’s collegiate best round headlines final day of Chevron Collegiate

HUMBLE, Texas — Victoria Schuldt fired a 3-under-par 69 to headline UTSA action in the final round of the Chevron Collegiate on Tuesday at the Golf Club of Houston (par 72/6,203 yards).

Schuldt wrote down seven birdies in registering the best score of her true freshman campaign and leading all Roadrunners on the final day of the tournament. A native of Hamburg, Germany, she began the day on No. 18 in the shotgun start and immediately logged her first birdie on the 356-yard, par-4. She then bounced back from a bogey on the first hole with a birdie on the 327-yard, par-4 fifth. She tacked on one more birdie on the front side with a four on the 522-yard eighth before reeling off four circled numbers over a five-hole stretch. She recorded a three on the 299-yard 10th and then posted birdies on the 295-yard, par-4 12th, the 478-yard, par-5 13th and the 165-yard, par-3 14th. Her 3-under scorecard moved her into a tie for 72nd place with a 228 (80-79-69).

Lauren Rios led UTSA by tying for 41st with a 3-over 219. The Coppell, Texas, native turned in her third consecutive 73 on the strength of 13 pars and back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3. She finished the event with eight birdies and played the par fives at 2-under par for the week.

Daniela Abonce was the next highest-finishing Roadrunner, tying for 61st with an 8-over 224. After opening with a 77, she registered an even-par 72 in round two before closing with a 75 today that featured three birdies, including two in a row on Nos. 12-13.

Maria Bastarrica was one shot behind Abonce in a tie for 66th with a 225 (74-78-73). The junior from Spain closed out the tournament with a 1-over scorecard that was highlighted by three straight birdies, a three on the 373-yard third, a four on the 470-yard fourth and a three on the 327-yard fifth.

Kayla Black ended up with a share of 68th after posting a 226 (83-72-71). The freshman from Canada logged her seventh par-or-better round of the season with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday that featured three birdies including a three on the 11th as part of a bogey-free back nine.

UTSA moved up one spot in the team standings on the final day, finishing 16th with an 885 (298-297-297), seven shots ahead of Maryland and 16 in front of North Texas.

No. 16 North Carolina claimed the team title with an 846, six strokes ahead of third-ranked Oregon. No. 20 Baylor was third (853), followed by a tie for fourth (858) between No. 27 Iowa State and No. 31 SMU in the field that included 10 nationally ranked teams.

The Roadrunners will be back in action next Monday-Tuesday, March 2-3, when they travel to Las Vegas for the Lady Luck Invitational.
