SAN ANTONIO — Led by individual medalist Joshua Hong, UTSA rallied from fourth place to capture the team title on Tuesday at the Military City Collegiate presented by USAA at TPC San Antonio’s Canyons Course (par 72/7,106 yards).
Facing windy conditions for the final round, the Roadrunners overcame an eight-shot deficit to day-one leader Middle Tennessee to claim their 27th team championship and first since the 2021 Lone Star Invitational, which was held in September of that year at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course.
Hong’s victory was also the first outright individual crown earned by a Roadrunner since that same tournament when Hunter Bott and Michael Rome shared medalist honors.
“I’m very proud of how the guys battled in tough conditions today and got the job done,” head coach Matt Wernecke said. “This group puts in so much hard work day in and day out. It’s great to see them have the chance to enjoy the rewards of all their hard work.”

UTSA posted a 299 in the final round, which tied for the best team total of the day. That pushed their 54-hole total to an 881, good for a four-shot advantage ahead of runner-up UTRGV (885). Middle Tennessee turned in a 312 on Tuesday to end up in third with an 886, while Abilene Christian fell from second to fourth in the 12-team field with an 891 after a final-round 316.
Hong was the only player in the field of 69 to finish in the red, carding a 1-under-par 215. The freshman opened the event with a 3-under 69 and a 72 on Monday to settle into second place. He closed with a 74 on Tuesday, holding off Abilene Christian’s Thomas Buisson and UT Arlington’s Arth Sinha, who tied for runner-up at even-par 216.
Hong wrote down two of his team-high 11 birdies in the final round and he played the par fives at 4-under for the event. He had a four on the 565-yard sixth followed immediately by a three on the 362-yard seventh to help counter a pair of early bogeys. Despite settling for his fourth bogey of the day on the 18th, the Guadalajara, Mexico, native held on for the one-shot victory while also logging his third top-10 finish of the season.
The UTSA lineup also was boosted by a top 10 from Francisco Solorza, who tied for eighth with a 4-over 220, while Sam Acharya grabbed a share of 11th at 6-over 222.
Solorza, a redshirt freshman transfer, entered the final round at 2-over par after opening with a 75 that was followed by a 1-under 71. He was steady on Tuesday, logging 14 pars and a birdie on the 453-yard, par- 4 14th hole en route to a 74. He ended up with nine birdies and played the par fours at 2-under for the week.
Acharya, a true freshman who hails from Nepal, battled back from a 79 in the opening round with a 4-under 68 in the second round, the best score of his young collegiate career. He closed with a 75 that was highlighted by a birdie on the 354-yard, par-4 first.
Logan Vargas logged a key eagle on the back nine during UTSA’s rally on Tuesday, writing down a three on the 532-yard, par-5 12th. The senior from Lubbock finished with a 76 that also included a pair of birdies on the front nine, ending up with a share of 26th (78-72-76—226).
David Martinez rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 33rd. The sophomore from Houston turned in his top round with a 1-under 71 on Monday afternoon, which was sandwiched by a pair of 78s.
Competing as an individual, Brayden Bare also placed inside the top 10, garnering sole possession of seventh with a 3-over 219. The redshirt junior out of Waco fired rounds of 72 and 71 on Monday before closing with a 76 on Tuesday that included four birdies.
Jacob King also registered four birdies in his final round, closing out a 231 (78-73-80) to tie for 45th while playing outside the lineup.
The Roadrunners will return to the course next Monday-Tuesday, March 2-3, when they travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana, for the Golden Nugget Invitational.
