Thrilling Comeback Secures UTSA’s First-Ever 6-0 Start

SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, UTSA Baseball made history in front of a lively crowd standing 1,079 strong. The Roadrunners hosted Dallas Baptist (4-2) for the second of a three-game series as they fought for their first 6-0 mark in program history. Down three in the bottom half of the eighth, UTSA posted four hits and a quartet of walks to score six runs, eventually securing the series with a 10-8 victory.

FIRST INNING

Ryan Self picked up his first collegiate start on the mound, facing the minimum to start things off. After allowing a one-out walk, the freshman picked off the runner to end the frame and send his teammates up to bat. Drew Detlefsen got things going with a single before advancing to scoring position on a Lane Haworth walk. The second pitch of Josh Arquette’s at-bat was sent to the outfield, bringing in Detlefsen for the afternoon’s first run. Christian Hallmark reached via a fielder’s choice one at-bat later, driving Haworth home for a quick 2-0 edge.

SECOND INNING

After walking the leadoff batter, Ryan Self was relieved by Christian Okerholm. After a swinging strikeout, a pair of batters reached on free bases, setting the stage for a two-run, game-tying double from DBU’s Cooper Neville.

THIRD INNING

A hitless away half sent Haworth back up to bat, landing a leadoff single. Arquette then joined his right fielder on the base paths after being hit. With Arquette up to second following a fielder’s choice, Jacob Silva’s single brought in UTSA’s third run of the contest.

FOURTH INNING

Christian Okerholm stepped aside for Conor Myles in the top half, who sat DBU down without a hit and recorded his first punchout. When the squads switched over, a pair of walks sandwiched Detlefsen’s second single of the afternoon to load the bases for Christian Hallmark. The sophomore patiently picked up an RBI with yet another walk, expanding the lead to 4-2.

SEVENTH INNING

Myles remained masterful on the mound, striking out four straight batters between frames five and six, retiring nine straight batters. After an RBI triple in the seventh, Head Coach Pat Hallmark turned to freshman pitcher Jake Qualia. A quick groundout scored a game-tying run, sending the game to the penultimate inning knotted at 4-4.

EIGHTH INNING

Half of the 18 runs scored between the two sides came in the eighth. Two hits, a pair of walks and an error aided DBU to a momentum-swinging three-run top half before Gunnar Brown stepped in for the final two outs on just three pitches. When UTSA came up to bat, it faced its latest deficit of the season, trailing 7-4. Detlefsen and Haworth both notched hits to open things up before both stole a base to reach scoring position. Following a Hallmark walk and a DBU pitching change, Silva recorded yet another single, keeping the bases loaded with one away. Diego Diaz absorbed a pitch to pull within one before Nathan Johnson evened up the score at seven all on a sacrifice fly. Jordan Ballin then drew a five-pitch walk, pushing his side back in front. Caden Miller followed the trend, drawing the easiest RBI in the sport to cue Drew Detlefsen. The left fielder capped off his incredible showing with a two-RBI single through the left side, scoring Ballin and Diaz to send his side to the ninth up 10-7.

NINTH INNING

Mike DeBattista took to the bump for the final three outs of the afternoon. A one-out solo home run pulled the Patriots within two runs at 10-8, but the visitors’ damage was done. A groundout and a subsequent flyout to Haworth in right field capped off the Roadrunners’ first save of 2026, sending the squad to 6-0 and securing the series victory.
