Roadrunners to return to action this week at Chevron Collegiate

SAN ANTONIO — Following a three-week layoff, UTSA will return to action this Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 23-24, at the Chevron Collegiate, which will be hosted by Houston at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.

The Roadrunners will bring a lineup consisting of Daniela Abonce, Victoria Schuldt, Lauren Rios, Kayla Black and Maria Bastarrica to the two-day, 54-hole, stroke-play event.

UTSA will face a large field that includes No. 6 Arkansas, No. 32 Houston, Illinois, No. 27 Iowa State, Maryland, No. 11 Mississippi State, No. 16 North Carolina, North Texas, No. 3 Oregon, No. 31 SMU, No. 43 TCU, Texas State, ULM and UNC Wilmington.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start each day. Live scoring will be provided online at scoreboard.clippd.com. Live video coverage will be provided by babygrandegolf.com.

UTSA is competing in the Chevron Collegiate for the third consecutive year, placing ninth last season with a 5-under 859 and 10th in 2024 when Abonce fired a 7-under 65 in the second round.

This will mark the second tournament of the spring season for the Roadrunners, who finished 12th at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club on Jan. 30-31 in Mexico. Abonce led the way by placing 13th with a 1-over 217 (74-72-71), good for her third top top-15 finish of her senior season.

Abonce paces UTSA with a 72.93 stroke average through 15 rounds this season. The Veracruz, Mexico, native has logged six par-or-better rounds, including a pair of sub-70 scorecards.

Rios ranks second on the squad with a 73.73 scoring average. The senior from Coppell, Texas, has registered six par-or-better rounds and posted her top career finish by tying for third place with a 1-under 215 (71-70-74) at the Red Raider Invitational.

Black boasts a 75.13 average in her debut campaign with the Roadrunners. The Mississauga, Ontario, native has turned in four par-or-better scorecards while her top finish is a tie for 26th at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.

Schuldt owns a 75.4 scoring mark as a true freshman, as the Germany native has posted four par-or-better rounds with her best showing a tie for 15th at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, where she carded an even-par 216 (70-70-76).

Bastarrica has played in a pair of events during her junior season, tying for 43rd at the Red Raider Invitational and placing 62nd at the Jim West Challenge.
