SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team picked up a victory via the run rule on Tuesday, taking down Houston Christian 9-1 across an evening at Roadrunner Field that saw home runs by junior Samantha Mundine, freshman Demiree Stafford and senior Caton Letbetter.
The Roadrunners (3-6) bested the Huskies (1-8) as freshman Arlette Hernandez (3-1) picked up the win after allowing just one hit over three innings with two strikeouts. Also appearing in the circle, classmate Aubrey Flores fanned two over two frames. Addy Prasifka (0-1) was pegged with the loss for HCU.
Redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid had a 3-for-3 afternoon, joining Stafford and Mundine in recording multiple hits. Sophomore Sabrina Wick and senior Madison Lenton also drove in runs, with Wick plating one and Lenton two.
The UTSA bats started hot with Stafford singling before coming home on a Wick double. From there, Mundine drilled one over the wall in right field for a three-run advantage.
A Stafford solo shot in the fourth saw a 4-0 score line, and HCU scored a run in the top of the fifth, prompting a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame. A base hit for Madrid was followed by a Madlock walk, putting two on for Lenton, who plated the pair on a double into right center. Senior Katia Reyes was issued a free pass, bringing up Letbetter, who walked it off with a three-run bomb, securing the 9-1 win.
UTSA will be back in action at Roadrunner Field this weekend, as they host the Roadrunner Classic, which will see Stephen F. Austin, Northern Colorado and UMass Lowell compete from Friday through Sunday.
