GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Lauren Rios is in the top 10 individuals and UTSA is in 10th place after first day of the Collegiate Invitational at GCC, which got underway Friday at Guadalajara Country Club (par 72/6,210 yards).
Rios is in a four-way tie for ninth place at even par and the Roadrunners have sole possession of 10th at 17-over par, as the field has reached the halfway point of the two-day, 54-hole tournament.
Rios opened the event by carding an even-par 72 in the first round. The Coppell, Texas, native wrote down three birdies while turning in her sixth par-or-better scorecard of the season. She started the day with four pars in a row before recording a birdie on the 368-yard, par-4 fifth hole. She later countered a bogey on the eighth with a four on the 483-yard, par-5 ninth to go out at 1-under 35. Rios added her third circled number of the round with a two on the 140-yard 15th to go with six pars and a pair of bogeys on the back nine.
In round two, Rios notched her fourth birdie of the opening day with a three on the 386-yard seventh to help get back to even par following a bogey on the preceding hole. She finished Friday with a five on the 483-yard ninth, her 19th par of the day.
Daniela Abonce is two strokes behind her teammate in a tie for 21st at 2-over par. Playing in her native country, the Veracruz native posted a 74 in the first round that was highlighted by a birdie on the 154-yard, par-3 17th. She wrote down par on each hole of the front nine in round two, giving her a tournament-best 23 for the day.
Victoria Schuldt is in a tie for 35th at 6-over par. The freshman from Germany opened with a 74 that featured a pair of birdies, and she is 4 over through nine holes of the second round.
Kayla Black has a share of 56th (+11) on a day that saw the freshman from Canada log one of only four eagles in the field with a three on the 477-yard 18th.
Sydney Bisgrove rounds out the UTSA lineup in 62nd (+13).
The Roadrunners are in 10th place at 17-over par, two shots ahead of BYU and three in front of No. 39 NC State, while trailing 43rd-ranked Colorado by just one stroke.
No. 19 Oklahoma State sits atop the team standings at 1-over par, followed by host and 38th-ranked Virginia, No. 28 Florida State and Tulsa in a tie for second place (+6).
