UTSA to open spring slate with Collegiate Invitational at GCC in Mexico

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open the spring season on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 30-31, at the Collegiate Invitational at GCC, which will be hosted by Virginia at Guadalajara Country Club (par 72/6,210 yards) in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Lauren Rios, Daniela Abonce, Sydney Bisgrove, Victoria Schuldt and Kayla Black to compete in the 54-hole, stroke-play event.

UTSA take on a loaded field that includes BYU, Chattanooga, No. 43 Colorado, No. 28 Florida State, No. 33 Houston, No. 39 NC State, No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 41 TCU, Tulsa, No. 38 Virginia and Washington.

The field will play 27 holes each day with tee times starting at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

This will mark UTSA’s third trip to Mexico for a tournament. The Roadrunners flew to Ensenada for the Baja Invitational in February 2006, tying for third place at Bajamar Resort. In April 2017, UTSA was the runner-up at the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational at El Tigre Country Club in Nuevo Vallarta.

The Roadrunners are coming off a fall campaign that saw them register a trio of top-10 team finishes, highlighted by a tie for third place at the Red Raider Invitational.

Abonce, who will be playing in her native country this weekend, leads the team with a 73.08 stroke average in 12 rounds. The senior from Veracruz has logged four par-or-better rounds including back-to-back sub-70 scores in the Sam Golden Invitational, as she tied for fourth with an 8-under-par 208 (74-75-69).

Rios ranks second on the squad with a 73.5 stroke average. The Coppell, Texas, native has turned in five par-or-better scorecards including in all three rounds of the Sam Golden Invitational where she carded a 3-under 213 (72-71-70).

Bisgrove boasts the third-best scoring average on the team with a 74.22 mark through nine rounds. The sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, owns a pair of top-25 showings including at the Sam Golden Invitational where she posted a 4-under 212 (69-71-72).

Black carries a 74.25 stroke average and has appeared in all four tournaments during her true freshman campaign. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, her top 54-hole total was an even-par 216 (72-71-73) in her debut at the Sam Golden Invitational.

Fellow true freshman Schuldt totes a 75.17 stroke average in 12 rounds. The Hamburg, Germany, native recorded her top finish and score at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, tying for 15th with an even-par 216 (70-70-76).
