‘Runners fall to Tigers on the road

MEMPHIS— On Friday, the UTSA women’s basketball team suffered a 52-40 setback at the hands of Memphis in American Conference action at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

The Roadrunners (9-9, 4-3 American) fell to the Tigers (8-12, 2-5 American), as Memphis took an early lead and never looked back. Senior Ereauna Hardaway led the contest in scoring and assists, logging 15 points and seven helpers. Classmate Cheyenne Rowe flirted with a double-double to the tune of eight points and eight boards, while Hardaway also collected five rebounds.

The Tigers scored the first five points of the contest before sophomore Emilia Dannebauer got UTSA on the board. A Hardaway free throw and a Rowe jumper were UTSA's only other scores in the frame as Memphis carried a 13-5 lead into the subsequent stanza.

Hardaway cashed in from the elbow to start the second, and the Tigers embarked on a 7-0 run for a 20-7 edge. Hardaway knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 10, and freshman Sanaa Bean connected on a pair from the charity stripe to pull within eight. Memphis, however, finished the quarter strong, taking a 26-14 lead into halftime.

The teams matched each other for the majority of the third, as a newcomer Adriana Robles jumper saw a 32-22 score midway through the frame. The battle raged on, with the Tigers sinking a triple at the buzzer for a 37-26 score entering the fourth.

Memphis came into the fourth hot, with back-to-back makes, issuing a 41-26 advantage. A 6-1 UTSA surge followed, with all six coming from Hardaway. The Tigers halted the run with a triple, resulting in a 45-32 score line. From there, Memphis never looked back en route to the 52-40 victory.

UTSA will now head back to San Antonio, with a matchup against North Texas slated for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
