TEMPE, Ariz. – The UTSA men’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Arizona State on Tuesday at the Whiteman Tennis Center, with freshman Constantin Radu earning his first collegiate victory.
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead with Kristof Minarik and Shu Matsuoka combining to defeat sophomore Enzo Vargas and freshman Timeo Bretin, 6-2. Bor Artnak and Ofek Shimanov then teamed up to top sophomores Oskar Grzegorzewski and Ben Chetewy Ungar, 6-2, securing the doubles point.
In singles action, Shimanov took down Bretin, 6-3, 6-1 and Mathis Bondaz Vargas, 6-2, 6-2, for a 4-0 ASU edge. Matsuoka then bested Chetwy Ungar, 6-2, 6-1, before Milos Mikovic beat freshman Maximilian Ontiveros, 6-4, 6-4. Grzegorzewski took Artnak the distance before falling, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, and Radu salvaged the ‘Runners lone point of the day against Minarik via a 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 10-6 victory.
UTSA will now head to Phoenix, with a Wednesday showdown against Grand Canyon set for noon at the GCU Tennis Facility.
