TAMPA, Fla.— The UTSA women’s basketball team suffered a 70-53 defeat at the hands of South Florida in American Conference action on Tuesday at the Yuengling Center.
The Roadrunners (8-7, 3-1 American) fell to the Bulls (11-7, 4-1 American) as USF used a stellar second quarter to take a big lead and never looked back.
Sophomore Emilia Dannebauer logged a career-high 13 points in the effort on 5-for-6 shooting, while classmate Damara Allen worked her first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Ereauna Hardaway dished out eight assists, tying her personal best for the third time, and fellow senior Cheyenne Rowe scored eight points and collected 10 rebounds.
The ‘Runners started hot, outscoring the opposition 11-3 across the first five minutes, with five points coming courtesy of Allen. USF came racing back with a 16-0 run, delivering a 19-11 lead. Hardaway sank a last-second shot before the period concluded with the Bulls up, 19-13.
USF’s success continued into the second as they grew a 37-16 edge, before taking a 49-24 lead into the locker room.
Looking to spark a comeback, the Roadrunners scored 12 of the first 16 points in the third, trimming the deficit to 17. From there, the squads matched each other en route to a 59-42 score line.
USF then kept UTSA at arm's length for the remainder of the contest, cruising to a 70-53 victory.
UTSA’s road swing continues Friday, with a 6 p.m. bout on the docket against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton.
