IRVING, Texas – Coming off the UTSA men’s tennis victory over No. 69 Rice on Sunday, senior Tiago Torres has been named the American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, officials from the league office announced on Tuesday. This is the second weekly honor for the Roadrunners this season and this is the third overall conference weekly award of Torres’ career.
Torres (Lisbon, Portugal) went 3-0 on the week for the Roadrunners, scoring a doubles win and two singles victories as UTSA split a pair of dual matches. He was a three-set winner at the No. 1 position with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 decision in a 4-2 loss to Charlotte. He then delivered the clinching doubles point and a straight-set singles win in the Roadrunners’ 4-3 win against No. 69 Rice. Torres took a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and was a 6-4 winner at No. 2 doubles against the Owls.
The Roadrunners will finish up the remainder of the season with a three-match homestand, next week at the UTSA Tennis Center. UTSA will host Prairie View A&M on April 11 in a doubleheader and will have Grand Canyon in town for Senior Day and the regular season finale on April 13. The American Athletic Conference Championships follows in Memphis from April 17-20 at the Tigers’ Leftwich Tennis Center.
