‘Runners to host Islanders, Texans in midweek bouts

UTSA will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday and Tarleton on Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team is set to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Salute to Educators on Tuesday at 4 p.m., ahead of a Salute to First Responders against Tarleton on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Roadrunners (18-28, 4-17 The American) split last week, taking down (RV) Texas State 6-0 before picking up a lone win across a three-game American Athletic Conference series against Charlotte. In UTSA’s 5-2-win, sophomore Sabrina Wick posted her first collegiate home run, while junior Katia Reyes tossed a complete game for the victory.

Sophomore Kalee Rochinski remains one of the top catchers in the country, with 16 runners caught stealing, placing her seventh across the NCAA, and she’s been plunked 16 times which ranks fifth.

The Islanders (10-34, 4-20 Southland) are looking to win back-to-back games after besting Stephen F. Austin, 4-3, snapping a 14-game losing streak in the process. The two squads met back on Feb. 26, with TAMUCC picking up a 7-2 win. Reyes provided a bright spot for the ‘Runners, picking up a pair of RBIs across a 2-for-3 afternoon.

Twenty-nine double plays for the Islanders are the third most nationally, and Mimi Thornton paces the offense with a .250 AVG. Paolina Baez posts a team-high 21 RBIs, and Thornton is second with 14. The pitching staff holds a 7.82 ERA, with Kendra Winfrey holding a 5-10 record and Malia Williams not far behind at 4-11.

The Texans (29-18, 13-8 WAC) went 1-2 against Abilene Christian last week and will face Prairie View A&M on Tuesday before making the trek to San Antonio.

Like Rochinski, Kalyn Hill has thrown out 16 base runners on the season, and she’s not the only squad member ranked in the top 25 nationally. Austin Germain is second in the NCAA with 19 doubles, and Shelby Schultz is 19th with a stellar 4.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Germain paces Tarleton with a .445 AVG, and Hill is not far behind in hitting .420. In the circle, Schultz holds a 2.76 ERA, and the staff maintains a 2.96 mark. Schultz leads the way with 13 wins and Hannah Blincoe has nine on the year.
