SAN ANTONIO—The UTSA softball team is set to host Texas State in a Battle of I-35 presented by H-E-B on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field. The squads will first wrap up a contest that was halted on March 26 due to inclement weather at 4 p.m. before playing the days initially scheduled game 30 minutes following its conclusion. Additionally, while supplies last, fans can receive free drawstring bags, koozies and cooling towels from our friends at H-E-B.
The Roadrunners (16-25, 3-15 The American) and Bobcats (28-12, 11-4 Sun Belt) will pick things up in the top of the fifth with no outs, nobody on base, and TXST holding a 7-0 lead.
Last time out, UTSA picked up a solo victory across a three-game American Athletic Conference series against UAB. A 13-8 come-from-behind win secured the 'Runners 16th win, surpassing last year's total with 14 games left in the regular season. Senior Lindsey Davis starred at the plate with two home runs and three runs scored, while sophomore Meredith Schmitt logged her fifth victory of the season. After the weekend, classmate Kalee Rochinski has climbed into 14th on the NCAA's runners caught stealing leaderboard, snatching 13 on the year, and she's been hit by 15 pitches for the second-most nationally.
Texas State has been red-hot, winning six of their last seven, sweeping South Alabama and Troy, while falling only to No. 1 Texas between the series.
The Bobcats boast one of the top pitching staffs in the country, with a 3.95 strikeout-to-walk ratio sitting sixth and 7.02 strikeouts per game ranking 18th. 10 shutouts are 24th nationally, and a 1.13 WHIP is 13th. Individually, Maddy Azua has twirled 138.0 innings for the 15th most in the NCAA, and her 5.74 strikeout-to-walk ratio is 11th. Not far behind, Emma Strood maintains a 4.92 ratio, which is 15th. Azua's WHIP of 0.86 is eighth, while her 17 victories are 12th.
Offensively, Aniya Coleman's on-base percentage of 0.555 is 15th on the national leaderboard. She tops the Sun Belt with a .443 batting average and leads the Bobcats with 13 home runs and 40 RBIs across the season.
