COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Wrapping up the first indoor opening weekend for the Roadrunners in December since 2013, the UTSA track & field teams gathered seven medals on Saturday evening at Texas A&M’s McFerrin-12 Degree Invitational in the first of three meets this indoor season at R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track.
Junior Nyaluet Diew led the Roadrunners with a pair of medals and got the hardware collection started in the opening event, earning second place in the women’s weight throw on a measurement of 17.56m (57-7.5). Diew followed up with a bronze in her second outing of the day, tossing 14.48m (47-6.25) in the shot put for the final women’s throwing event of the meet. Adding to UTSA’s collection, sophomore Waylon McKenzie followed suit on the men’s side, hitting 17.06m (55-11.75) in the weight throw for second place, ahead of fifth-place Ryan Stillman (15.06m/49-5), eighth-place Aiden Mercado (12.98m/42-7) and ninth-place Trevor Kirby (12.78m/41-11.25). Also in the top 10 in the women’s shot, freshman Anna Hofmane went 12.26m (40-2.75) for ninth in her first collegiate performance. In men’s shot put, Kirby was also ninth at 11.56m (37-11.25) in his collegiate debut.
Making his first indoor long jump appearance since 2023, redshirt junior Jemuel Miller leapt 7.30m (23-11.5) for third place and second among collegiate performers. Junior transfer Jayden Williams followed at 6.86m (22-6.25) in sixth place. For the women, sophomores Brina Likar (5.86m/19-2.75) and Nyariek Kur (5.73m/18-9.75) went back-to-back at sixth and seventh, while classmate Mifri Veso was 10th at 5.56m (18-3).
Sophomore Selma Ims picked right back where she left her outstanding debut campaign, earning silver in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.48 clocking, while sophomore Charlie Staddon was fifth overall and fourth among collegians in the men’s 60m hurdles with a time of 8.15 seconds.
Taking on a new event specific to this meet, junior Ida Breigan flexed a little sprint strength with a third-place 37.70 in the women’s 300-meter, while freshman Jamarri Bowie (35.14) and Staddon (35.24) came in fifth and sixth in the men’s event
Logging the final medal of the night and the first distance hardware of the year, sophomore Cortlin Salge went 2:28.49 in his first career 1,000-meter to earn bronze and classmate Gabe Tubbs finished sixth in 2:39. Shortly thereafter, junior O.J. Ruiz finished eighth in the 3,000-meter with a time of 8:49.62.
Making his UTSA running debut, freshman Tyler Madison came in eighth in the 60-meter with a 6.99 clocking.
Next on the schedule, UTSA will resume the indoor season on January 23 at Texas A&M’s Ted Nelson Invitational.
