IRVING, Texas – For the first time, track & field coaches from within the American Conference have voted the predicted preseason order of finish in the American Indoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Heading into the 18th season leading the combined program under Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox, officials from the league office announced on Thursday that the Roadrunner women were picked at fourth and the men’s team at seventh in the inaugural poll.
The UTSA women accumulated 108 points in the poll to be picked fourth, behind defending champion Tulane at 135 (eight first-place votes), South Florida at 120 (three first-place votes) and Charlotte at 118 (one first-place vote). Last indoor season, the Tulane Green Wave just barely edged past the Roadrunners in the final events of the American Championships, squeezing out a 3.5-point title win after UTSA scored 92.5 points. Picked to finish behind the Roadrunners on the women’s side are Rice (103), East Carolina (92), North Texas (76), Memphis (66), Wichita State (66), Tulsa (56), UAB (33), Florida Atlantic (25) and Temple (16).
The UTSA men finished seventh at last year’s American Indoor meet, just .83 points shy of Charlotte. With UTSA picked at seventh in the men’s preseason standings on 27 points, three-time defending league champion South Florida was the unanimous choice, receiving all eight first-place votes and 64 points. Charlotte and Wichita State tied for second with 49 points. Tulsa (34) and North Texas (33) completed the top five, followed by Rice (29) and then UTSA. Picked below UTSA in the poll are Memphis (25) and East Carolina (14).
