UTSA announces 2026 season opener versus UTRGV

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA officials announced on Tuesday that the Roadrunners will kick off their 2026 season against UTRGV on Sept. 5 at the Alamodome.

The first-ever meeting between the Roadrunners and the Vaqueros, an FCS member of the Southland Conference, will open the 16th season of UTSA Football and seventh under Jeff Traylor, the winningest coach in program history.

UTSA also has a non-conference home game against Colorado State scheduled for Sept. 26 at the Alamodome.

The Roadrunners also will face Texas State on Sept. 12 in San Marcos and Texas the following Saturday in Austin for their non-league slate.

The American Conference announced the 2026 scheduling model earlier this fall. UTSA will host home games against Navy, North Texas, South Florida and Tulsa. The Roadrunners are slated for road contests against Florida Atlantic, Rice, Tulane and UAB next year.

The Roadrunners (6-6) are set to face FIU (7-5) on Friday, Dec. 26, in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl for their sixth straight and seventh overall bowl appearance. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN live from Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.

UTRGV is coming off an inaugural season that resulted in a 9-3 record, including a 5-3 league mark.

The Vaqueros are coached by Travis Bush, who served as the Roadrunners’ offensive coordinator for their inaugural campaign in 2011 as well as the 2010 practice season.

Additionally, UTRGV offensive coordinator Jeff Bowen was a graduate assistant at UTSA from 2011 to 2013, while former UTSA quarterback John Simmons serves as the Vaqueros’ director of football operations.
