Six Roadrunners land on All-American Conference Teams

IRVING, TEXAS — Led by first-team honorees Shad Banks Jr. at linebacker and Robert Henry Jr. at running back, a total of six UTSA Roadrunners landed on the All-American Conference Teams, as the league office on Tuesday announced its football postseason honors as voted on by the league’s 14 head coaches.

In addition to the two first-team selections, Caile Hogan made the second team at punter, while Devin McCuin (wide receiver), Houston Thomas (tight end) and Jimmy Wyrick (safety) all earned a spot on the third team.

With the six selections this year, UTSA has collected a total of 97 all-conference certificates in six seasons under head coach Jeff Traylor.

A graduate transfer from TCU, Banks paces the Roadrunners with 86 total tackles, 52 unassisted tackles, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries, which is tied for the program record. A Houston native and product of North Shore High School, he also has registered 6.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and a pass breakup this fall. He has logged three games with double-digit tackles, which also leads UTSA. He charted a season-high 11 tackles in the 17-16 road victory over Colorado State and has posted back-to-back outings with 10 stops apiece over the last two weeks. He was named American Conference Defensive Player of the Week after turning in 10 tackles, one TFL, a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown, one fumble recovery and a PBU in the 58-24 home triumph over East Carolina before recording 10 stops with one behind the line of scrimmage against Army.

Henry has emerged as one of the top rushers in the FBS in his final campaign with the Roadrunners. The senior from Lumberton, Mississippi, has piled up 1,045 yards and nine touchdowns on 151 carries, good for averages of 6.9 yards per attempt and 95.0 yards per game. The third Roadrunner to crack the 1,000-yard mar on the ground, he has topped the century mark five times this fall, including in the first four contests. He opened the year with 177 yards and a pair of TDs on 16 carries at Texas A&M and then recorded 158 yards and two scores to go with a receiving TD against Texas State. He posted 144 rushing yards in back-to-back wins over UIW and Colorado State and went for 138 yards at North Texas. He leads the nation with six plays from scrimmage of 70-plus yards, including an FBS-best five rushes of that distance. He currently leads the American Conference and ranks third nationally in average yards per rush.

Hogan currently boasts a UTSA-record 46.16-yard punting average this season. The senior from Australia has punted 49 times with 16 of those sailing 50-plus yards including career-long 60-yard punts against Temple and North Texas. He has pinned opponents inside their 20-yard line 17 times and forced 14 fair catches. He averaged 50.5 yards with a long of 59 on eight punts in the season opener at Texas A&M. He turned in a season-best 50.6-yard average at North Texas, while he had three punts end up inside the 20 in the victory over Rice. He currently ranks 14th in the FBS with his American Conference-leading punting average, which is a notch above Lucas Dean’s program standard of 45.98 set in 2020.

McCuin is UTSA’s leading pass-catcher this season with 59 receptions, 653 yards and seven touchdowns. The junior from Jacksonville, Texas, is riding a stretch of 30 consecutive games with a catch, hauling in at least a pair of passes in all 11 games in which he has played this fall. He currently ranks sixth on the program’s single-season list for receptions and is tied for sixth for TDs. He charted his first career 100-yard game with 100 yards and a TD on seven catches in the 28-7 win at Charlotte. He caught a season-high eight balls for 96 yards and two scores in the 48-26 home triumph over Tulane. He had five grabs for 83 yards against Texas State and posted two receiving touchdowns and 51 yards on seven catches in the 48-20 victory over UIW. He was on the receiving end of seven passes for 86 yards against Army in his last outing.

Thomas leads a deep UTSA tight end room with 34 receptions and 347 yards to go with a pair of touchdowns. The redshirt junior out of College Station, Texas, has caught a pass in all 12 games this fall, headlined by 77 yards on seven grabs at South Florida. He made four catches for 54 yards in the 28-7 road triumph over Charlotte and he caught five balls for 35 yards and a TD in the 58-24 win against East Carolina. Aiming to become the third UTSA tight end to reach 1,000 career receiving yards with 918 in 42 games, he had four receptions for 36 yards versus Texas state and hauled in a touchdown pass at North Texas.

Wyrick emerged as a leader in the secondary for UTSA this season. The redshirt sophomore paces the Roadrunners with eight pass breakups, and he ranks second on the team in total tackles with 61 and solo stops with 42. He also has recovered a pair of fumbles and forced one to go with a half-tackle for loss. A Dallas native and product of South Oak Cliff High School, he charted a season-high 11 tackles in the 17-16 road victory over Colorado State. He made nine stops and broke up a pass against Army and logged seven tackles, one PBU and a fumble recovery in the 48-26 home win over Tulane. His other fumble recovery came in the 48-20 win against UIW and he charted two PBUs versus Temple and North Texas.

The Roadrunners are bowl eligible for the sixth straight season and will find out their postseason destination by Sunday, Dec. 7.
