FRISCO, Texas–The UTSA women’s basketball team suffered a 59-42 defeat at the hands of SEC-foe Auburn on Monday at the Hoopfest Women’s Basketball Challenge at the Comerica Center.
The Roadrunners (2-3, 0-0 The American) fell to the Tigers (7-0, 0-0 SEC) as junior Jayda Holiman charted a season-high 14 points to lead the contest. Also scoring in double-digits, senior Cheyenne Rowe recorded 13 to go with seven rebounds.
Back-to-back makes for Rowe and sophomore Damara Allen handed UTSA an early 7-4 lead, but a 12-2 Auburn run saw a 16-9 advantage midway through the first quarter. Junior Idara Udo and senior Ereauna Hardaway sank shots down the stretch for a 19-11 score line entering the second.
The ‘Runners started the following stanza hot, with four straight by Holiman pulling them within four. The Tigers responded with a six-point surge, issuing a 26-17 score line. The squads then exchanged blows before heading to the locker room with Auburn leading, 33-24.
The Tigers opened the third with a triple, and the teams matched each other for the majority of the quarter, sending the contest into the fourth with Auburn leading 44-31.
Another three for the Tigers started the scoring in the final frame, and they never looked back en route to a 59-42 victory.
The Roadrunners will conclude the Hoopfest Women’s Basketball Challenge on Wednesday at 4 p.m., taking on Grand Canyon.
