UTSA announces pair of fall signees

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head men’s golf coach Matt Wernecke announced on Wednesday that the program has signed Cole Pregler and Gabriel Derbez Torres. The pair will join the Roadrunners beginning with the 2026-27 season.

Three-time first-team all-district performer at Jordan High School … has landed on the all-region team twice … helped guide the Warriors to the 2025 Class 6A State Tournament where they finished sixth after a third-place showing that the regional tournament … runner-up at the 2025 Don Massengale Memorial … qualified for the state tournament as an individual as a sophomore, tying for 31st in a 36-hole event that included a 4-under 68 and was highlighted by a hole-in-one … won the 2025 AJGA CT Pan Junior Championship with a 4-under-par 212 (69-75-68) on the strength of 14 birdies … also carded a 212 (69-67-76) to place third at the CT Pan Foundation Junior Championship in July 2025 … fired a 211 (72-71-68) to tie for 23rd at the 2025 NW Arkansas Junior … part of the winning duo at the 2025 Greenwood Cup … placed fourth at the 2024 LJT Collegiate Preview … claimed medalist honors at the 2024 Lake Conroe Challenge in a sudden-death playoff … father, Chris, played tennis at Oklahoma State.

"We are excited to be adding Cole to the program next fall,” Wernecke said. “Cole checks all the boxes, and he has continued to improve since the day we started recruiting him. He is coming off a very successful summer and fall, picking up multiple wins. Cole will bring a tireless work ethic and highly competitive game. He is going to be a great addition to our program." 

Gabriel Derbez Torres (Monterrey, Mexico/Prepa Anahuac)
Qualified for the 77th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, firing a 2-under-par 142 (69-73) to tie for 33rd … claimed medalist honors at a trio of events in 2025 … earned that U.S. Junior Amateur berth by tying for first with a 66 at a qualifier in Houston … won the LXX Campeonato Nacional Interclubes with a 209 (69-68-72) … carded a 9-under 207 (68-68-71) to finish atop the field at the 51 Torneo Anual de Campestre Torreon … claimed the top spot at the LXV Torneo Anual de Golf de Invitacion Club Campestre Monterrey with a 213 (74-72-67) … competed in the 2025 Toyota Junior World Cup in Japan, tying for 26th with a 289 (75-73-73-68) … runner-up at the 2024 VI Copa Multimedios after turning in a 71-64-63—198  … tied for fourth at the AJGA Will Lowery Junior Championship with a 1-over 217 (77-70-70) … brother, Eduardo, currently plays for the Texas Longhorns … father, Ricardo, played tennis at Texas.

"We are thrilled to add Gabriel to the roster next fall,” Wernecke said. “Gabriel has been a very consistent player over the past couple years and has won multiple events this fall. He continues to improve and show that his game is competitive against the best in the country. Gabriel will come in and make a positive impact on our program right away."
