McDonald will join the squad for the 2026-27 season

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA head coach Karen Aston has officially signed future Roadrunner Amaya McDonald on Wednesday as part of the Early Signing Period.

Amaya McDonald | 6-2 | F/C | Shreveport, La. | Braswell HS

Braswell HS Head Coach Lisa Williams on McDonald:

"A proven leader over the last three years who will leave an impactful legacy here at Braswell High School. Amaya has been one of the catalysts behind our team's successes. Not only does she lead vocally, but she also leads by example. Amaya prides herself on being a great teammate and can best be described as a coach's player who accepts praise and responds to constructive criticism in a way that makes herself and the team better. I am extremely proud of all that Amaya has accomplished and excited about her future.  Thank you, Amaya, for it all. Congratulations!"

A 6'2 forward out of Shreveport, McDonald will join the squad following a stellar career at Braswell High School in Aubrey, Texas. She helped the Bengals win District and Bi-District Championships in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, as well as the area title in 2024-25.

Individually, McDonald was named Newcomer of the Year for 2023-24, and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) selected her for their All-Region team in 2023-24 and 2024-25. She was the DRC Co-Impact Player of the Year in 2024-25, while also making the Sport Day High School All-Area second team. Additionally, she clubbed with Texas U.

McDonald excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.80 GPA that has landed her on multiple Academic All-District teams. At UTSA, she will study mechanical engineering.

She is the daughter of Shequita and Anthony McDonald, and has three brothers, Anthony McDonald, Andrew McDonald and Travis Bryant.

Head Coach Karen Aston on McDonald:

"We are so pleased to welcome Amaya and her family to our basketball program. She's an incredibly intelligent student-athlete with a high basketball IQ. She's got a tremendous work ethic, making her a perfect fit for our team … we can't wait to get her on campus and get to work!"
