Vargas fires 70 on day one of Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS — Logan Vargas fired a 2-under-par 70 to highlight action for the UTSA men’s golf team on Sunday at the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/7,617 yards).

Vargas is part of a seven-way tie for 11th place after matching his season-best score in the opening round of the 54-hole event. The senior from Lubbock logged four birdies against only two bogeys in what was his second straight 70 dating back to his last event.

Vargas was quick to write down his first birdie of the day with a four on the 596-yard second hole. He then got to 2-under par with a three on the 440-yard sixth before closing out a 34 on the front nine with three pars in a row. Vargas suffered his first bogey on the 11th but quickly countered with a three on the 412-yard 12th. He then moved to 3-under with a circled number on the 315-yard, par-4 14th before settling for a bogey on the 18th.

Led by Vargas’ red number, the Roadrunners registered a 3-over 291 and are in 11th place, four shots ahead of Abilene Christian and only two out of a tie for eighth between East Tennessee State, North Texas and Sam Houston.

Brayden Bare posted an even-par 72 and has a share of 28th. The Waco native logged a team-high five birdies in the first round, including four as part of a 3-under 33 on the back. He recorded three in a row on Nos. 14-16 while turning in his fourth par-or-better scorecard of the season.

Logan Zurn is two shots behind Bare in a tie for 49th at 2-over par. His 74 was headlined by three consecutive birdies, also on on the 14th through 16th holes.

Joshua Hong posted a 75 for the other counting score and the freshman is in 56th, while Francisco Solorza has a share of 78th (78).

USC are Baylor are knotted atop the team standings at 9-under par, followed by South Alabama (-7) in third.

Clark Akers of Furman carded an 8-under 64 to grab the individual lead.

The second round is scheduled for Monday.
